Distinct both from one another and from indifference. Pain is a very strong motivator, so delight must be strong too, in order to ensure sympathy draws us to others instead of driving us away. Beauty = prompts pleasure via love/ urge to protect. Sublime = prompts delight via fear/ awe. Many works we look at tie beauty and vulnerability closely together. The demonic almost always has some sublime traits. Big on pinning down precise meaning of words. Helps everyone communicate intelligibly by ensuring we mean the same thing when using the same words. Sense that society goes downhill when people are sloppy about what they mean. Note that saying something doesn"t belong to a category (eg. beautiful) is not the same as saying you can"t still like it or etc. Some outdated ideas, but worth engaging with. Show how people thought about it in his time. Burke refutes the view that one is simply the lack of the other.
