Examples of phytochemicals and their effects (take your own notes) Effects can vary depending on dose, person, life stage, health etc. Benefits not yet related to individual phytochemicals; rather whole foods. Very little safety assessment on concentrated supplements can be toxic. Diets with whole grains, fruit, vegetables, herbs, spices, teas and red wine (moderation) Epidemiological evidence: lowers death from cancer, lowers heart disease, lowers heart attacks. Red wine flavonoids = levels too low; alcohol risks. They contain many benefits that you cant get from a supplement. Epidemiological evidence from asians living in asia less: osteoporosis, breast, colon and prostate cancer, heart diseases, menopause symptoms. Increased soy products? phytoestrogen = plant relative of estrogen. Estrogen sensitive cancer = no support from breast cancer studies. Osteoporosis and menopause diet high in soy = bone protection similar to hrt.
