INTS 1240 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Nonverbal Communication, Kinesics, Proxemics
Document Summary
May or may not be something we choose: gestures, facial expressions, tone of voice, instinctive responses. Occurs on several levels; vocalizations that aren"t words (sighs, grunts, gasps), visual cues (hygiene, clothing), instinctive responses (smiling, blushing), gestures. We take into account other"s non-verbal communication and make meaning. Types of non-verbal communication **know for midterm** out of it. Postural echo -> when two people engaged in conversation they begin to mimic each other. Proxemics -> the use of human space. How people sound depends on how someone speaks to them. Chronemics -> time is a form of communication. Touch -> how someone perceives touch, response to touch. Watch for subtle cues: patterns, contradictions. Context: what might be happening nonverbally when playing with friends vs. more intense situation.
