Psyc 2219 - lecture 3 - experience of loss. A common experience that can be encountered many times throughout a lifespan; it does not discriminate. Loss is being parted from someone or something valued. Loss can differ from one person to another. Tangible/physical: real object or a physical loss. Symbolic: psychosocial loss of something intangible. Ambiguous loss: no verification of loss or no certainty that the person will come back or return to the way they used to be. Type one: physically missing: physically absent and psychologically present, adoption, migration, missing, miscarriage, natural disaster. Type two: psychologically missing: physically present and psychologically absent, addiction, dementia, mental illness, separation, injury. Mental: confusion, disbelief, anxiety, sense of disorganization, depression (brain chemistry can change, sensory responses undependable and erratic, paranormal experiences (ex. hallucinations, vague sense of the deceased"s presence) Emotional: sadness, longing, loneliness, sorrow and anguish, guilt, frustration at being unable to control events, anger and outrage at the injustice of the loss.
