Awareness of dying communication styles (glaser & strauss) Critical to this theory is the recognition that dying is a social process occurring over time. Closed awareness: the patient is unaware of his or her impending death, although others may know, there is a lack of communication about the person"s illness or the prospect of his or her death. Suspected awareness: the dying person suspects his or her prognosis and may try to confirm or deny suspicions by asking others, those who know do not verify this suspicion.
