Psyc 2245 - lecture 2 - research methodology. Empirical science: a systematic way of observing the world and its interactions; empirical refers to observation and science refers to knowledge. Theory: organized set of principles that can explain observed phenomena. Hypothesis: testable statement or idea about the relationship between two or more variables. Independent: the variable one changes or varies in order to evaluate its effects on some other variable: dependent: the variable one measures to see if it is influenced by the independent variable. Observational method: technique using observation of people and systemically recording measurements of behaviour. Qualitative interview studies: individuals are asked for their subjective perspectives and beliefs. Interjudge agreement/reliability: the level of agreement between two or more people who independently observed and coded a set of data. Ethnography: method used to understand a group or culture by observing it from the inside without imposing any previous notions one might have.
