Psyc 2245 - lecture 8 - prosocial behaviour. Prosocial behaviour: any act performed with the goal of benefiting another person. Altruism: desire to help others even at the cost of one"s self or life: altruistic personality: aspects of a person"s makeup that cause them to help others in a wide variety of situations. Kin selection: behaviour that helps a genetic relative is favoured by natural selection. Norm of reciprocity: expectation that helping others will increase the likelihood of others helping us in the future. In-group: a group with which an individual identifies with, and of which they feel as a member of. Out-group: a group with which the individual does not identify with. Why do we help others: evolutionary perspectives/explanation like genetic heredity and kin selection, empathy: the ability to experience events and emotions the way another person experiences them.
