PSYC 3346 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Social Proof, Deindividuation, Social Facilitation
Document Summary
Psyc 3346 lecture 9 notes conformity & groups. It is the tendency to change perceptions, opinions, or behaviour in ways that are consistent with group norms. Informational influence: people conform because they believe others are correct in their judgments: normative influence: people conform because they fear the consequences of appearing deviant. Types of conformity: private acceptance: changes in beliefs (and behaviour, usually occurs for informational influence, public conformity: superficial change in overt behaviour only, usually occurs for normative influence. Groups: zajonc (1968, cockroaches run down a runway faster when in the presence of other cockroaches compared to when they are alone, this is because of increased physiological arousal. Simple vs. complex tasks: when cockroaches had to solve a difficult maze, they were slower when other cockroaches were present than when they were alone. In this case, arousal actually slowed down their performance on the complex task.
