SLGY 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Social Inequality
Document Summary
Slgy 1101 - lecture 11 - classes and workplaces. Functionalist approach: poverty and inequality are important to society, under capitalism, inequality is defined as the graded ladder of people with different jobs and incomes. Inequality is good and helps bring out excellence and productivity: jobs at the top require more education and effort and offer greater rewards. These people are socially useful and valued: when investment has compensation, inequality works well. Critical theory approach: there are class conflicts in the economy, unemployment is a structural condition made by the ruling capitalist class to boost their profits, there is a reserve army of labour. Class relations under the influence of capitalism causes all the conflict within/between societies. Workplace is not for sociability and creativity, but for repression and mistreatment of workers. Feminist approach: takes a critical analysis approach, women and men differ and have different experiences, capitalists profit from the exploitation of women more than from men.
