Action is social in so far its subjective meaning takes account of the behavior of others and is thereby oriented in its course. Because social action ranges from highly rational to highly emotional the basis for accuracy in understanding may be rational, emotional, empathetic, or artistically appreciative. Thus use two types of understanding and the two types of evidence o types of understanding: 1. direct understanding involves comprehending the meaning of an action by the physical or symbolic characteristics of the act such as observing that certain facial or body movements indicate anger, boredom direct observable evidence.
