A few common features tie different forms of appearance deviance together: It varies over time and place, according to prevailing cultural standards. It has the potential to change social forms. Appearance norms are shared notions about beauty that are shared: They may lead to ridicule or sanction directed at those who do no meet the mainstream cultural standards of beauty. They are most frequently felt by women, as women have historically been most valued for their beauty and fertility. According to merton, one can respond to appearance norms in one of two ways; Conformity/ritualism: an acceptance of norms and an effort to reproduce them. Innovation: a rejection of norms and an attempt to live by new appearance rules. Total institution separate inmates from their old identities- the degradation ceremony- which begins with changes to inmate appearance. Often includes a generic hairstyle, an institutional uniform, removing individual identifiers (jewelry). Through clothing, we link our personal identities to shared social identities.
