BIOL 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Statistical Hypothesis Testing, Reductionism, Test Validity
Document Summary
Science is the: observation, identification, experimental investigation, theoretical explanation of natural phenomena. Some scientists also gather information by collecting ad comparing information. Different branches of biology study life at different levels using a variety of tools. As new tools become available, they allow scientists to ask new questions and study more in- depth: ecology, anatomy, physiology, cell biology, molecular biology, systems. Reductionism: reducing a complex system to its components to understand how the parts of the system work. Systems biology: studies an organism as a whole to study the interaction of genes, proteins and biochemical reactions: often used to study cells. Hypothesis: a proposed explanation for a natural phenomenon. It is a proposition based on previous observations or experiments studies: useful hypothesis makes predictions that can be shown to be correct or incorrect. It is testable: additional observations or experiments support or reject a hypothesis, never really proven.
