Robert hooke: 1665 built compound microscopes, looked at a cork and saw cells. 1838 matthias schleiden: cells are living entities; plants are aggregates of cells. 1839 theodor schwann: saw similar structures in an animal tissues. 1855 rudolf vir(cid:272)ho(cid:449): (cid:862)e(cid:448)ery (cid:272)ell origi(cid:374)ates fro(cid:373) a(cid:374)other (cid:272)ell(cid:863) From these observations, we have the cell theory. The cell theory: all living things are composed of one or more cells, cells are the fundamental working units of organisms, all new cells come from existing cells by cell division. 4. 1 microscopy as a tool to see cells. Microscope: an instrument that allows us to move beyond the limits of the human eye and probe the structure and function of cells.
