Pathogen- disease- causing microorganisms; have special properties that allow them to invade human body or produce toxins. When a microbe overcomes body s defenses a state of disease results. Pathology- the scientific study of disease, concerned with: Infection- the invasion and growth of pathogens in the body. Disease- any adverse condition in which all or part of the body cannot function normally. Infectious disease- a disease caused by a pathogen. Epidemiology- the study of when and where diseases occur and how they are transmitted. We are generally free of microbes in utero. Our normal microbiota- microbes that establish permanent residence without producing disease under normal conditions. Found in nose and throat, eyes, mouth, skin, large intestine, urinary and reproductive system. Normal microbiota can benefit host by preventing overgrowth of harmful microbes: Microbial antagonism: examples: vaginal ph= 4 due to normal microbiota.
