Document Summary

A business process is a set of activities that deliver an outcome with some value to a customer (internal or external). Business processes are built based on business rules. They should not be contained in either of these. Organize around outcomes, not tasks. (organize- to change the formal structure of the business) Have those who use the output of the process perform the process (self serv. ) Subsume information-processing work into the real work that produces the information. (combining information processes with physical work) Treat geographically dispersed resources as though they were centralized. Link parallel activities instead of integrating their results. (parallel activities- activities done at the same time). Communication between different groups (ex. engineers telling marketing about new features) Put the decision point where the work is performed, and build controls into the process. Capture information once and at the source. External partners need to adapt (vendors, customers, etc. ) Compensation and performance evaluation schemes need to be aligned and adapted.
