The perception an individual has of another person is not always an accurate depiction of reality. A number of perceptual biases influence our perception. Recency effect: the tendency to give undue weight to the most recent information obtained or last impressions, last impressions count most. Occurs when an individual organizes his or her perceptions around the presence of certain traits or characteristics of a target person that are of interest to him or her. This reliance on central traits influences the perception of the target person, biasing the perceiver to center on those traits that he or she considers important. Physical appearance such as height is a common central trait in work settings that is related to a variety of job-related outcomes. Individuals who are overweight tend to be evaluated negatively on a number of workplace outcomes. Suggests that an individual has a theory about which personality characteristic go together.
