Everything you write for this course is a form of analysis (critical thinking: course is to make you think critically. Criticism: judging the qualities of a piece of writing. Must learn to think critically so we can look at the groupings (classifications) and the comparisons in the world around us: text, image, everyday opinion and thought, and question them. When reading critically (especially if going to write critically: discuss how the author says things not what they say, similar to peer review. If you are given any information: author/title/publisher/dedications, assume it is significant. If it is unclear, look into it further: not understanding may influence own understanding, can provide insights that will help in consideration of entire work. Headings, pictures with captions, charts, graphs, bold or italicized type: they are there for a reason, the clues they give can be helpful in understanding. Divisions in the text: spacing, subtitles, note how they contribute to organization.
