Keep your thesis in mind while you read everything. Read abstracts of potential articles and look at key words in the indices of potential reference books. You should have support for any major statement you are going to make. If you have a point you wish to discuss/that you think is important, you should make sure you have a source to support it. Remember that you will need to make it clear what is your opinion vs what is someone else"s opinion. Chance to discover new things and important connections. Chance to demonstrate understanding of the topic. Demonstrate understanding of sources in a literal, interpretive, and analytical ways. Develop as many supporting paragraphs as necessary to explain thesis. Each body paragraph covers a topic that is directly related to the thesis statement. Thesis should refer to all topics: even if only indirectly, should be in the same order in which you discuss them, prepare readers for conclusion.
