Document Summary

October 21st interactions rs part ii. Radiation that is not absorbed or scattered in the atmosphere can reach and interact with the earths surface. There are three forms of interaction that can take place when energy strikes or is incident (i) upon the surface: Absorption (a), transmission (t), reflection (r) total incident energy will interact with the surface in one or more of these was. Depending on the wavelength and the material and condition of the feature the proportions of each will differ. Absorption (a) when radiation (energy) is absorbed into the target. Transmission (t) when radiation passes through target. Reflection (r) when radiation bounces off target and is redirected (towards sensors of rs) two types of reflection. Specular reflection: when a surface is smooth you get a specular mirror-like reflection where all of the energy is directed away from the surface in a single direction. (hitting off pavement)
