Tissue- collection of cells that perform a common function. Ecm is molecular glue of non-living material secreted by cells composed of ground substance (glycoproteins, proteoglycans) and protein fibers (collagen, elastin, reticular) Reticular- short, delicate fibers that form netlike network, meshy port that blood cells pass through. Ecm is composed of ground substance, a fluid like medium that suspends the cells and extracellular fibers. Glycoproteins- sticky proteins that bind to integral proteins of the plasma membrane, connecting ecm components of ecm. Gags bind water and play a role in determining viscosity of ecm. Allows ground substance to act as molecular sieve if necessary. Cover and protects body surfaces, passageways, and cavities. Specializes in moving things in and out of body (permeability) Structural support of the body (particularly bone and cartilage) Skeletal muscle- move or stabilize the position of the skeleton. Smooth muscle- moves food, urine, and reproductive tract secretions.
