NURS 1012 Lecture 5: Respiratory System
Document Summary
Supplies surface for exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Conditions the air: warms, filters, and humidifies. Nostril nasal cavity nasal conchae pharynx (nasopharynx, oropharynx, laryngopharynx) larynx (glottis, epiglottis) trachea 2 primary bronchi (left, right) secondary bronchi tertiary bronchi bronchioles alveoli. Conducting airways- involved in distribution/ delivery of air (nasal cavity to bronchioles) Respiratory airways- involved in gas exchange (smallest bronchioles to alveoli) Pharynx is shared by the respiratory and digestive system. Pseudostratified, ciliated columnar epithelium that contains mucous cells lines large conducting airway. Mucus escalator- cleans particulate matter from inhaled air- mucus secreted by respiratory mucosa traps debris larger than 5 microns and the cilia sweep it towards the pharynx. Functions of the larynx: supports and protects the entrance to the trachea. Glottis- vocal folds + rima glottides (opening between the two vocal folds) Epiglottis- flexible tongue shaped flap that prevents solids and liquids from entering opening into the respiratory tract (rima glottides)
