Pseudostratified, ciliated columnar epithelium that contains mucous cells lines large conducting airway. Mucus escalator- cleans particulate matter from inhaled air- mucus secreted by respiratory mucosa traps debris larger than 5 microns and the cilia sweep it towards the pharynx. Functions of the larynx: supports and protects the entrance to the trachea. Glottis- vocal folds + rima glottides (opening between the two vocal folds) Epiglottis- flexible tongue shaped flap that prevents solids and liquids from entering opening into the respiratory tract (rima glottides)
