Nationalism began to peak in the 19th century. The state contract between the sovereign and society (rousseau, hobbes) Nation: shared cultural history and allegiance to a common homeland. Legal tool to develop a nation: citizenship. Who is included in the body politic. National affiliations and how we come to be affiliated with a given nation: state, nation state, nation. Barabantseva argues that the nation is best examined at the margins: not the centre.
