RELS 2610 Lecture 25: Unit 11 Decline

47 views3 pages

Document Summary

Things can decline/get worse in people and society. We can ignore the basic directives to be attentive, intelligent, reasonable, plan creatively and carefully, evaluate wisely, and follow through on your evaluation responsibly. Short-term self-interest may rule when the long-term costs to the community are at stake. The degree to which such aberrations exist in a society is variable. Social pressure is a powerful tool: however, when the aberration becomes the anticipated norm, if people must capitulate to its standards in order to survive, then decline can be quite rapid. Example: if the canadian justice system were to favour the rich and most powerful of the time, then people would eventually lose respect for the law. Successful groups justify their injustice through a self-serving ideology: where a creative response to the situation is needed, stopgap measures are offered. Active resistance to those in power becomes inevitable.
