child welfare system, - Child welfare focuses on making sure children and youth are in a safe and
stable environment. The child welfare system is known for removing children from their home,
when in fact its more about the safety and stability of that child to receive the best care possible
for the best future. Provincial services for children and youth provide a branch that involves 6
key activities to ensure the child’s safety and well-being 1. child and family support, protecting
children of abuse or neglect. 2. family support, providing a range of family activities in order to
maintain healthy families. 3. child placement finding temporary care for children who cannot
continue to live with their guardians. 4. foster care 5. guardianship delivering services to
children in government care and 6. Adoption, placing the child in a new home
in-home services: are provided through the help of family members live together harmoniously
in a secure and safe environment. The main categories of in-home services include family
counselling services, parenting supports and family education services
out of home services: are implanted when the home situation become un suitable for the child,
including foster care, kindship, residential care, reunification services
battered child syndrome: for the first time a medical profession identified child abuse as
regular and recurring aspect of family life in many households
Badgley report: brought to light the disturbing extent of child sex abuse in Canada, the report
revealed that 1out of every 2 females and one out of every 3 males has at some point been a
victim and experienced child sexual abuse, this report concludes that all systems for reporting
child sexual abuse were flawed and ineffective and that children needed better protection
duty report: people in profession that bring them into contact with children have a duty to report
if they suspect child abuse or neglect of any kind
*risk assessment models: in the area of social work risk assessment models are used to
estimate the likelihood that a child will be maltreated and if a harmful event should occur, based
on careful examination of pertinent data. The goal of risk assessment is to prevent future abuse
or neglect.
Collaborative approaches to child protection
is collaborative approaches to child protection, collaborative approaches focus on a working
relationship between social workers and family members. Allowing collaborative approaches
allows for better communication between social workers and the family, it allows the family to
be a part of the future safety and well-being of the child.
1) family group conference, a formal meeting facilitated by a child-welfare worker which
included the child’s, family and friends into developing the best plan to ensure the safety
of the child,
2) meditation when families and social workers disagree on meeting the child’s needs
meditation can break this dispute and give everyone a chance to relax, both sides focus on
common goals and interest and to work towards a mutually acceptance solution that will
benefit the child
