Durkheim looked at published statistics in 4/5 different european countries (small scale) on rates of suicide and compared them. There were three time periods (revolutions) that all came together and pushed the discipline of sociology forward. Science makes a claim to truth based on evidence. The only way sociologists believe you can bring change is to make sure the data they find (whether they like it or not) is known. People are responsible for the way society is organized. This means we can reorganize society differently. Taking people out of farms and into the city in a nutshell. Steam power radicalized the way society was organized. Machines (lots) were brought into what was now called a factory. Now you have to ability to mass produce a product. Before steam power, people were only making enough for their own consumption. When you mass-produce, you have a surplus of goods and you can start selling (sweaters, jam, boots, etc. )
