Total insituions it is a physical structure where you eat, sleep have leisure, religious worship (all of your needs can be met under one roof) Ex: convent, monastery, boarding school, prison, mental hospitals. The purpose of total insituions is the re socializaion of the self. Gofman wrote his book on total insituion while pretending to be a psychiatric paient. Now a days this would be considered totally unethical. He saw this insituions as highly problemaic. Idea of total intuiions: person who totally conform to rules. Ex: person in boarding school who conforms to rules, does whatever she"s supposed to do. But when she leaves the total intuiion she is not. Ex: people who are in prison are supposed to be re socialized but when they get out of prison they have more knowledge about criminal acivity, they are not actually re socialized. Your sex is the biological piece (you are born either male or female)
