Disability: a universal human experience that anyone can experience at any time, disabilities can
limit a person ability to engage in daily activities, disabilities can be visible or invisible,
temporary or permeant.
-Disability is an issue of discrimination that relates to the physical, developmental earning and
mental health aspects of people that results in inequality at the social and individual levels
- disability emerged as a government policy issue in Canada during ww1 when many
Canadian soldiers returned home injured
-world health organization: united nations authority on health issues, describes disability as a
universal experience, nothing that all human beings can at some point in their lifetime
experience,
-united nations convention of the rights of a person with disabilities, includes a social perspective
when it defines a person with disabilities as” those who have a long term physical, mental,
intellectual or sensory impairments which in interaction with various barriers may hinder their
full and effective participation in society.
-the purpose is to protect the human rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.
Biomedical approach,
-considers disability to be an impairment to an individual’s body or mind that is a result of a
health problem, illness or disease or abnormality
-people with disabilities are sick and therefore need help in the form of medical treatment and
specialized care
-the approach used to accommodate those with disabilities is to fix the individuals impairment
through medical interventions focused on illness and abnormalities.
Criticisms:
- locates the defect in a person’s body and or mind and that person may be defined as
defected, abnormal and by extension biologically or mentally inferior.
- Ignores the social and environmental factors that affect people with disability, this can
result in the social marginalization’s and isolation of people with disability
Functional limitations perspective:
similar to biomedical. Wants to quantify the degree of disability a person might have and to
measure his or her functional limitations when performing tasks
- Looks at utilizing social and environmental criteria in the evaluation of individual’s
functional limitations
- let’s individuals define themselves as disable or not
Criticism;
-functional limitations perspectives have suggested that the attempts to qualify the type and
severity of disabilities have contributed to the inconsistency in eligibilities criteria for
government programs for people with disabilities.
- doesn’t take into consideration episodic, recurrent or cycled illness
-focuses on inability and not ability using a standard of ‘normalcy’ for functional assessment
socio-constructionist perspective:
- Disability is socially constructed by able bodied, ability-oriented and ability dominant
society.
