Chapter 7: Marriage and Death Rituals
-Marriage rituals include weddings, bridal showers, bachelor parties, honeymoons,
anniversary celebrations, vow renewals, funerals and mourning practices.
-Rituals identify the sacred in society and involve symbolism/predictable practices
Rites of Passage: mark one’s movement from one status to another (engagement, wedding
ceremony)
Rituals have three parts;
1. Separation from previous status
2. Transitional rites
3. Rites of incorporation into the new status
Rites of Progression: celebrate continuity. Referred to as maintenance rites. (anniversary
celebrations, vow renewals)
Pre-wedding Rituals
-Bridal showers an “early ritual” which refers to the final stop in the bride’s status
passage
-Are given gifts that reflect traditional gender role
-Bride is guest of honor
-Maid of honour generally plans
-Attendance demonstrates social solidarity and symbolizes support
-Men participate in stag parties/bachelor parties
-Involve drinking and saying goodbye to the man’s sexual freedom.
-Bachelorette parties have materialized
-Women dress up, go to a bar, strippers, returns home in cab.
