GEND 1006 Lecture 5: February 13
Document Summary
The readings for this week were lengthy and when combined with the podcast they were emotionally dif cult as well. Vickers says that mainstream second wave western feminists have tended to focus on too limited an idea of what violence against women includes and what causes this violence. Violence is imbedded in social institutions, racism and class. Second wave of feminists did a great job of breaking the silence in regard to domestic violence. It was happening more than anyone really thought, people don"t really want to speak about violence publicly. and then people started doing research on it and found that it was happening more and more than people thought. Second wave feminists focused on violence of women and she called this the gender lens. We still need to use a gender lens but second wave feminists tend to look only at the axis of gender without looking at things like race, class etc.
