Musculoskeletal disorders (msds) injuries or disorders of the muscles, nerves, tendons, joints, cartilage, and spinal discs caused by hazards or risk in the workplace. (i. e. carpal tunnel syndrome) *msds do not include any injuries or disorders caused directly by violence, vehicle collisions, a fall, etc. Most commonly affected areas: back, shoulders, neck, elbows, hands, and wrist. Force: amount of effort by the muscles, and corresponding pressure placed on body parts. When a force is too high; damage can occur to muscle fibers, tendons, joints, ligaments, etc. Damage can occur from: one single movement or action, or repeated force in an awkward posture and/or repeatedly. Activities, such as lifting, lowering, carrying, pushing pulling, gripping and manipulating objections. Posture: position of various parts of the body during an activity. Neutral posture: joints are being used near the middle of the range of motion. *even if in neutral posture, pain and discomfort can result if in same posture for long time.
