Connection between the writing system and those of the ancient near east. The oldest artifacts containing hieroglyphics show the written language fully formed. Consisted of about twenty signs, order of the letters fixed and was used as a guide for assembling architectural elements n the building of temples. Contained the simplified forms of the egyptian hieratic with principles of sound representation that was the basis of cuneiform. Can be combined to form sounds of any languages. Gained foothold among etruscan and greek people after. Emerged in the seventh century bce in etruria. Exposed to a rich cultural interplay among near eastern, Tuscan order the characteristic variation of an unfluted shaft with a simplified base, capital, and entablature. Temple roofs often had sculptures: cella rectangular rooms. Monumental sculpture: made is terracotta clay fired incredibly hard, took many years of refinement. Very difficult to get the consistency of heat from the old-fashioned kilns: life-sized terracotta figure of apulu (apollo) .
