The black tulip: wanted black tulip, did by changing growing conditions of parents. Breeders did a lot of wacky things, could be hard to determine selection as something that worked. More individuals of each species are born that can survive. Individuals vary in their success at surviving and reproducing. White flowers are visited more than yellow flowers by bees. Reproduction is non-random: successful individuals succeed because of the useful trait. White flowers did better in first generation, and the next generation increased more.
