Starts to shift, not as absolute as it had been (tell her to pay taxes) Wealthy father, but no longer have wealth when he dies. Not supposed to have a career or education. Victim of father"s reluctance to have a suitor for her. She"s told to be high status woman in town with a husband. She does her best to find her own suitor. Homer is beneath her station (disgrace to town) Suggestion that he"s gay (not a marrying man)
