SUST 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Total Fertility Rate, Biotic Component, Exponential Growth
Document Summary
> begins slow then ramps up, limits even if rate of increase stays the same. Size of population that can be supported given specified resources. The closer the population growth is to the carrying capacity the more linear the form is. Biomass pyramid, higher levels support lower biomass, each step you go up more energy is lost. 10% of energy from one section of pyramid goes towards other section. Another type of biotic factor is interactive competition between species that may limit populations , if there is a high rate of competition among 2 species there is a negative effect on both species - > on slideshow. Limiting factors-> temperature, light, oxygen, carbon dioxide etc. Each organism has the an optimum/ideal range that these factors include: Zones of stress - > above or below the ideal. Range of tolerance -> includes optimum plus zones of stress. Limits of tolerance-> upper and lower limit beyond which organism can survive.
