Document Summary

Examples of systems the endocrine system can influence: cardiovascular, reproductive, digestive, etc. The body can secrete products from different types of glands. It is important to differentiate between them because they each serve specific purposes in the body. Endocrine: glands that secrete hormones directly from the cells of the gland to the extracellular fluid and bloodstream. Exocrine: glands that secrete cell products into a duct system. Fun fact: in greek, endo means within, and exo means outside, this should help you remember that endocrine glands secrete their hormones within the gland and exocrine glands secrete their hormones outside of the gland. Hormones act as chemical messengers, traveling through the bloodstream to cause an effect on a target organ. Fun fact: many medications use exogenous hormones (hormones not made within the body) to induce chemical signalling that would otherwise not be present. This can include disease treatment, as well as prevention of pregnancy.
