ANAT 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Phases And Stages, Soft Palate, Salivary Gland
Document Summary
Anatomical components of: oral cavity, palate, tongue, teeth, salivary glands, pharynx. Smell the stuff first, passes through thalamus and brings up memories and tells us to eat (?) All senses are somehow involved in eating (crunch, smell, soft ) Phases and stages of digestion today focus on oral phase: oral phase: ingestion and mechanical processions, gastric phase: digestion and secretion of juices, intestinal phase: absorption, assimilation, and elimination. Functions: food ingestion, mechanical processing, chemical digestion, speech (articulation and vocalization), breathing, somatosensory sensation, immunity (ring of lymphatic tissue in oral cavity first barrier to infections) Anterior boundaries: lips or labia, labial frenulum, teeth, tip of tongue. Lateral boundaries: cheeks, teeth & gingiva, jaws. Superior boundaries (roof): hard and soft palates. Posterior boundaries: uvula, palatine tonsil, lingual tonsil, roof of tongue, fauces.
