ANAT 215 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Conus Medullaris, Arachnoid Mater, Foramen Magnum
Document Summary
Extends from the foramen magnum and tapers to an end at l2 to form the conus medullaris. Foramen magnum (giant hole) -> base of skull/brain. Spinal cord is expanded in two regions to supply sensory/motor innervation to the upper and lower limbs. Supplies sensory info from and transmits motor info to upper limbs. Supplies sensory info from and transmits motor info to skeletal muscles in lower limbs. Compression to spinal nerves below conus medullaris. Altered sensation/weakness of the lower limbs, urinary incontinence. Treatment surgical decompression, fixing of the underlying issue. Three layers of specialized membrane that protect the brain and spinal cord. N spinal cord, these two layers fuse together t form one thick layer of dura, which is held tightly to the arachnoid mater. Most deep: pia mater translucent/parent, tight, would damage nerves underneath if removed. Filum terminale (longitudinal support to length of spinal cord). Extends from conus medullaris to coccyx (tailbone)
