Adrenal cortex: vital, prod corticosteroid
hormones made from cholesterol
1. Zona glomerulosa: 15% of cortex,
cluseters of cells prod
minercorticoids which control
electrolyte and water conc in
blood (aldosterone-reg Na+K)
2. Fasiculata: 77% of cortex, appear
as cords/rows and foamy due to
lipid droplets in cytoplasm, stim by
ACTH from anterior pit to pro
glucocorticoids (cortisol and
corticol steroid reg metabolism of
carb, proteins and fats)
3. Reticularis: 7%, small clustered
cells, secrete sex hormones
(gonadocorticoids) mostly
androgens with unknown effects
but responsible for pubic hair
growth, female libido + muscle
develop
Adrenal medulla: chromaffin cells (mod
postgang symp neurons), when stim by
pregang they release NE+E
Blood
supply
Inferior, middle (from aorta) and superior
(from inferior phrenic) suprarenal A, drains
via suprarenal veins
Pancreas
Long slender 8-10 inch organ, deep to
stomach, nodular appearance, prod
enzyme rich juice for SI, Islets of
Langerhan: 1-2 mill
Alpha cells: fround at periphery of Islets
prod glucagon (hyperglycemic) stim liver to
convert glycogen into glucose
Beta cells: smallest + most numerous, prod
insulin (hypoglycemic) lowers blood
glucose cia stim uptake into cells and
inhibiting conversion of glycogen into
glucose
Delta cells: prod somatostatin- shuts down
alpha+ beta cells
