Week 3: the baroque in italy, spain, england, france and the dutch. Bernini"s david uses the space around it reaching out into the space of the viewer (our space! Bernini"s david is not content the way michelangelo"s david is to remain separate from us. When looking at bernini"s david, we immediately start to feel what david is feeling. This sympathy is very important to baroque art. David had a job in hand as well and it was to kill goliath! We all know he succeeded as did bernini in this piece. As is often the case with the free-standing sculptures of bernini, he invites us to journey around the piece, to view it from a variety of angles and we do, almost as participants in the event. The ceaseless play of concave and convex surfaces make the structure seem elastic-like. Judith and her maidservant with the head of holofernes.
