Wanted to become independent from austria: austrian emperor removed all of bosnia herzegovina"s autonomy in october, Archduke ferdinand travels to bosnia herzegovina and the black hand assassinating him and his wife in sarajevo. Assassinator gavrillo princip: considered a serbian hero. Cause of ww1: paris peace conference. Creation of modern day yugoslavia: tito. Yugoslavia attempted to run by committee, not successful. Nationalism became popular again: late 20th century. Slovenia and croatia declared independence in 1991 and were immediately recognized. Brought in to protect" the interests of the territories.
