Arch week 2 lecture 1 (lecture 3 continued) Quebec bridge 1917 has similar structural geometry as scotland"s firth of forth. Art nouveau showing characteristics of 1889 emphasizes use of industrial materials readily manufactured. Industrial material makes a rise during this style of architecture. Architectural aesthetics changing from mass and 3-d to linearity. Use of nature"s curvature also an impression of art nouveau. Balance and symmetry is not as frequently used. Ornamentation and structure become the same thing where as classical ornamentation is separate from structure. Most architects were taught in art academies and art academies taught the classical style. Art nouveau artists tugged between which parts of classical style to bring over to the new era of architecture. Charles garnier with opera house shows how he follows the classical style but includes room for change and strays away from classical style. Classical - post and litel is used at the window. Mass and solidity of first floor before windows.
