BCHM 316 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Glycogen, Glucagon, Blood Sugar
Document Summary
Low insulin levels in the blood have the opposite effect by promoting widespread catabolism , Glucagon increases it especially of reserve body fat . Insulin and glucagon work together to balance your blood sugar levels, keeping them in the narrow range that your body requires. These hormones are like the yin and yang of blood glucose maintenance! Insulin: tells body cells to remove glucose from blood stream. As glucose moves into cells, blood glucose levels decrease. Other cells, such as in your liver and muscles, store any excess glucose as a substance called glycogen. Your body uses glycogen for fuel between meals. About 4-6 hours after you eat, the glucose levels in your blood decrease.
