Document Summary

2 factors govern fate of a chemical reaction. Many cells use atp to drive reactions in 1 direction. Catalysts called enzyme can speed the reaction rate. Entropy- a measure of the disorder that cannot be harnessed to do work. Energy flows into an ecosystem in form of light and exits in form of heat. Cells creates ordered structures from less ordered materials. Organisms also replace ordered forms of matter and energy with less ordered forms. G= free energy or amount of energy for work. Biochemistry uses g" : standard free energy change. Free energy is a measure of a system"s instability, its tendency to change to a more stable state. A process is spontaneous and can perform work only when it is moving toward equilibrium. Exergonic reaction proceeds with a net release of free energy and is spontaneous (not a literal term!) Products will always try to move back to equilibrium.
