BIOL 103
Sidney Eve Matrix

 Superficially charming and manipulates others for personal gain  Lack of anxiety makes it impossible for psychopaths to learn from their mistakes, t heir lack of positive emotions lead them to behave irresponsibly and often cruelly towards others  They act impulsively, as much for thrills as for something like financial gain Controversies with Diagnoses of APD and Psychopathy  Almost all psychopaths are diagnosed with APD but many people diagnosed with APD do not meet the criteria for Psychopathy on the PCL-R  Lack of remorse is but 1 of 7 criteria for DSM’s antisocial personality diagnoses and only 3 of these criteria need to be present to make the diagnoses (so, a person with ADP may not have lack of remorse; but which is central to Psychopathy) Research and Theory on the Etiology of Antisocial Personality Disorder and Psychopathy  Role of the family o Lack of affection and severe parental rejection were the primary causes of psychopathic behaviour or parents’ physical abuse and failure to teach responsibility towards others o Fathers are likely to be antisocial in their behaviour o It’s risky to trust the retrospective reports of psychopaths because lying is a key feature of this disorder (can be avoided using a follow-up study) o Inconsistent discipline and no discipline at all predicted psychopathic behaviour in adulthood, as did antisocial behaviour o Limitations  the harsh/inconsistent disciplinary practises of parents could be reactions to trying to raise a child who is displaying antisocial behaviour & many individuals who come from disturbed social backgrounds do not become psychopaths  Genetic Correlates of APD o Adoption/twin studies shows that genetics play a factor o Adoption studies reveal higher than normal prevalence of antisocial behaviour in adopted children of biological parents with APD and substance abuse o Both twin/adoption studies also show environmental plays a significant role o High levels of conflict and negative and low levels of parental warmth predicted antisocial behaviour in a twin study o Most genetic research has focused on antisocial personality disorder and has not focused specifically on psychopathy  Emotion and Psychopathy o Inability of the persons to profit from experience or even from punishment; they seem to be unable to avoid the negative
