Two major categories of organisms based on their mode of obtaining nutrients: autotrouphs (self nutrituon, harvest light or chemical energy and store it in carbon compounds. They exist in an inorganic environment and manufacture organic compounds. Plants: heterotrophs (other nutrition, must get complex nutrients from the environment to sustain life. Eat other organisms and are found in higher trophic levels. Extracellular digestion the conversion of complex polysaccharides are converted into simple sugars outside of the cells. Fungi are able to get nutrients from dead organic matter. They can also be predators by capturing microorganisms through various strategies. Folds of the plasma membrane surround the particle to be ingested forming a small vacuole: vacuole pinches off inside the wall. Lysosomes fuse with the vacuole and pour their potent enzymes onto the ingested material.
