BIOL 103 Lecture 2: BIO 103_Week 2
Document Summary
Bio 103 week 2 lecture 1. The end point of digestion is amino acids. Refer to the checklist for last week"s assignments go through them and complete the ones you didn"t do. (unlikely that we will get to the nervous system in lecture 3 of this week) Insects digestion is similar to vertebrates but there is no pepsin. Acidic ph in the stomach is an adaptation for vertebrates who eat bones. Insects do not eat bones do not require pepsin. Insects possess salivary glands (tsetse flies; anticoagulant in salivary glands) Active proteases are eliminated with feces (marino sheep; produces very fine wool; maggots will lay their eggs on living flesh inside the sheep wool. Initial larvae may have difficulties softening the flesh (hydrolysis of the proteins), but as more active proteases are eliminated into the feces, it becomes easier. An example of extracellular & extrabody digestion: people can use insect larvae to help clean up wounds.
