BIOL 103 Lecture 1: Nutrition and Digestion
Document Summary
Two major categories of organisms based on their mode of obtaining nutrients: These organisms harvest light or chemical energy and store it in carbon compounds. They can exist in an inorganic environment and they manufacture organic compounds. For instance: co2 + h2o -> organic compound such as c6h12o6 (glucose) These organisms must get complex nutrients from the environment. They get large organic compounds past cell membranes by digestion. Bread mold is digesting the starch in the bread. It has hyphae, which produce enzymes that are secreted into the bread, and the starch is then digested extracellularly. Fungi can get nutrients form dead organic matter. Some are parasites and can they get nutrients from living animals. Athlete"s foot fungus extends fungal branches (hyphae) into the cells of the foot to absorb nutrients. If you collect beer mats or coasters from the bars they contain nematodes they use alcohol as energy source.
