Document Summary

Bio 302 lecture 27(november 15th): predation & herbivory. On the advantage of being different (from the perspective of predators) All these interactions are really about a fight between organisms for energy, nutrients, and fitness (battle for energy that influence fitness) Why don"t prey evolve adaptations to eliminate predation/herbivory: trade off, arms race coevolutionary dynamics, energy constraint to adapt to all the various predators, phylogenetic constraints, functional constraints, costs of defense. Interactions among factors: strength of selection, co-evolution response of predators herbivores. Why might prey or predator evolve faster: prey must evolve or else being caught can halt fitness (death) while for a predator to (cid:373)iss a prey does(cid:374)"t ha(cid:448)e that drasti(cid:272) effe(cid:272)t. Dynamic interactions between predator/hrbivoires and their prey: we expect them to be dynamic bc of the reasons mentioned above. Location high up in the tree: influence which secies that can live together, interaction amoung species, this (cid:373)ight (cid:271)e the (cid:373)ost i(cid:373)porta(cid:374)t fa(cid:272)tor dri(cid:448)i(cid:374)g .
