BIOL 316 Lecture 15: BIOL 316 WEEK 5 NOTES
Document Summary
Fish hatcheries and stocking: school hatchery programs are becoming common, helps in increasing fish population in local areas. Lake huron (east coast) have introduced this program in schools. Grown fish have altered 100+ genes in diversity: homogenize genes. Wild fish populations are more diverse in genetic make up. Once released, can mate if wild fish and decrease genetic diversity. Hatcheries are involved in suppling and fertilization of fish eggs: rearing of young in stock, supply recreational and commercial fisheries. Put eggs into trays with ideal environmental conditions: temperature, ph, nutrients etc. Hatch out fish into riverways and ponds. Put hatched fish back into the wild: helps stock fish population. Use of railway/ train system: within train carts it had fish in milk jugs, moved coast to coast with desired fish for the specific location. Creation of dams increased the use of hatcheries because of the disruption in streams.
