BIOL 335 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Alkaline Earth Metal, Evaporation, Alkalinity
Document Summary
Salinity: ionic composition of fresh water: cations: positive ions, anions: negative ions. Greater conductivity will have greater electric flow. Measure of conductance of a solution to electrical flow. More ions present results in more conductance. Purer water will have a lower conductance. Conductivity meters help measure this: more ions = greater salinity = greater conductivity, conductivity changes as depth increases. Softwaters: have low salinity: found in igneous areas. Hardwaters: have larger concentrations of alkaline earth ions: found in calcareous areas, kingston fits under this. Two types of major ions: conservative ions: are ions that undergo small/ minor changes from biotic mediated processes. These include: mg2+,na+, k+, cl: dynamic ions: are ions which are greatly affected by biotic process. Type of water that has more salinity than fresh water, but not as much as seawater. Termed intermediate water because it may have resulted from mixing seawater and freshwater together.
